With nothing but five star reviews since 2018, this photography walk and workshop is your opportunity to join me and venture out in the early morning taking the chance to shoot unforgettable photos of the Eternal City.
This tour is, in fact, professionally designed to give you the best photographic experience of your Roman holidays at sunrise. By starting during the “Golden hour”, we will be shooting along the characteristic narrow streets and entering the historic squares, when the sun smoothly brushes the tiled roofs, the beautiful yellowish facades, and the domes of gorgeous churches. That is also when the usually overcrowded charming streets and squares, designed by Borromini, Michelangelo and many other extraordinary artists, are now silently deserted, and when the ancient Roman forums will pose for us to show their 2000 years of history.
So, as the city will slowly wakes up to begin its vibrant life, we will walk from Saint Peter’s square to Pantheon, and Piazza Navona, and from the extraordinary Campidoglio (our Capitol Hill) towards the most visited monument in the world: the Colosseum!
But if you prefer to take my photography workshop when Romans are speeding on their scooters and cars, and tourists are roaming around, or, let’s be honest, you simply want to rest in bed and have a slow morning, you can choose the afternoon slot and meet at 2 p.m.. Then sunlight might be a bit sharper, but Roman beauties have been patiently there for so many centuries, I am sure they will understand your relaxed mood.
In any case, which ever tour you will decide to book, I will always make sure you will be experiencing an amazing journey filled by shadows and lights, small perfect details and wonderful buildings, through our fascinating itinerary, along which you will learn or fine tune:
-
The use of natural light, and how to menage dynamic range.
-
Manual mode settings: ISO control, white balance, aperture, and shutter speed.
-
Composition: framing compelling shots using leading lines, symmetry, foreground interest, and layering.
Android and iPhone users are also welcome. And if you don't have a professional camera, but you would like to shoot with one, I have two fully equipped Nikon sets (D850 and D600).
Plus... very important: if you'll feel hungry at the end of the tour, I will be more than happy to guide you to a simple but excellent small restaurant, where you will have the opportunity to taste the real Roman cuisine.

What my Customers say in their Reviews: Best ever! The best time we have ever had on a tour, bar none. We were a group of four, but only one actively participating in the photography instruction part of the tour. Giulio made it fun, exciting and great for all four us. His pre-tour communications by email made the whole process seamless. He delivered a perfect blend of history and anecdotes about each landmark visited. His talent as a photographer is only surpassed by his charm, humor and amazing spirt with which he conducts his tour. If you are lucky enough to secure a tour with him, go for it! Highly recommended. We will be booking again next time in Rome. Elsa Balestrino If looking for a photography guide in Rome this is the one! I booked both the Rome by day and Rome by night tour with Giulio. Both are fantastic. Booking was easy. Giulio's web site lets you pick the date you are interested in and then once booked sends you a confirmation email. A few days before your tour Giulio provides an email with information on where to meet and asks questions about your photography skills, type of gear you will be bringing and what you are hoping to see. Giulio is very responsive, promptly replying to emails and even phone calls. Giulio knows Rome inside and out. The best part was in addition to photographing the well known parts, coliseum, Pantheon he takes you to less famous but just as beautiful areas that are not crowded letting you take great photos. Giulio is a professional photographer that is able to impart knowledge and skills if that is what you are looking for. However, his focus is on your experience and is content to let you have your best moment as well. If you are looking for a guide to take you around Rome so that you can take great pictures Giulio and Rome Photo Fun Tours is a great value and worth your investment. John Corey Best thing I did in Rome!! I spent 10 wonderful days in Rome seeing the ruins and museums and taking in the scene. I did a lot of fun things, but hands down, the BEST experience was the photo tour I took with Giulio. He met me promptly at the designated time and instantly put me at ease. He’s a smart, funny, affable guy who really knows his way around photography. From the beginning, he helped identify great shots and worked on composition with me. I used my iPhone 14 Pro Max and am thrilled with the results. I can tell a noticeable difference between the photos I took pre-tour from those I took during and after. But you’re not just getting expert photography help. Giulio was the best tour guide among the several I hired during my trip. His deep knowledge of all eras of Roman history will impress and enlighten you. And his easy conversational style, excellent English and sense of humor were the icing on the cake. I don’t usually gush in reviews, but I’m gushing now. Do yourself a favor and book one (or more!) of Giulio’s tours - it’s worth every euro and then some. You will not regret it! Rich Cole Capture the Essence of Rome! Giulio provides an insiders view and a professional photographers eye to capturing the essence of central Rome. He is also very knowledgeable about Roman history and has stories to tell. I would highly recommend him if you want to capture more than snapshots of the eternal city. Tarra Kongsrude I highly recommend a photo tour with Giulio! The photo tour with Giulio was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone interested in taking better photos and learning about some of the history and background of beautiful Rome. Giulio's knowledge of photography is excellent and makes the photo tour so fun and interesting. Eileen Genevro Truly wonderful! So easy to book and arrange meeting up. Giulio knows exactly where to take you for the best photo opportunities in the city and the best time of day to be in specific places. He is so knowledgeable about the city and helped me to take some really amazing photos even though I was only using my iPhone 15 pro. He is an expert photographer who can assist you to take your photography skills to new heights. He is patient, friendly, lets you go at your own pace, and takes you from one amazing sight to another, what an outstanding experience. Susan B. A great Rome Experience! Giulio provides a very easy to book experience while in Rome [or other areas]. As the amateur photographer I am, he provided great advice and hints to get the best photos out of the tour. When weather made our early morning tour doubtful he happily gave us options for other times…we chose the night tour which was great as we had far less people around, great shots, and cooler temperature. We definitely went places we would not have found on our own.Even better is the very informative history of Rome and detailed explanation of motives and symbolism behind various areas and sculptures. I’m telling all my friends …they must do this! Martin Kilpatrick Wonderful Photography Tour with Great Results! I highly recommend this day tour of Rome. I booked it after having done the night tour with the same photographer, Giulio D'Ercole. It was just as enjoyable as the night tour and I got so many beautiful photographs thanks to Giulio's coaching. Starting very early in the morning at the Castel Sant 'Angelo, Giulio took me to many of the other iconic spots of Rome (St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, a few churches), and we ended in the beautiful Borghese Gardens. Giulio showed me hidden gems to photograph, proper vantage points to photograph landmarks, and talked about basic concepts like framing and lighting. He also told me some of the history of the landmarks. I will be able to use his photography tips for the rest of my life when doing travel photography. Giulio is also an extremely easygoing person and always tried to accommodate my requests. This tour, and the night one, were highlights of my recent trip to Rome. Anita M. Informative and fun! Our tour with Giulio was wonderful. He was very good at advising both the best angles, places to take shots and the appropriate settings for my camera. As a very inexperienced photographer, I learnt a lot. The tour also offered a wealth of interesting information about Rome's history. We visited both well known sites and some lesser known gems. My husband, a non photographer, came on the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended. Maggie Sherlock Fun and informative! My husband and I like to pretend we are amateur photographers (in truth, we usually leave our DSLRs on automatic the whole time…). Giulio was a fantastic guide. He gave us tips we had never considered before and we were able to get some incredible pictures. He also gave us some Roman history along the way. I’d highly recommend anyone to take a tour with him!
